NEW YORK — In the aftermath of the devastating Brooklyn tragedy in which Leiby Kletzky was killed, state lawmakers are proposing a measure that would strengthen law enforcement officials’ ability to quickly find a missing child.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), Assemblyman Peter Abbate (D-Brooklyn), and State Senator Diane Savino (D-Brooklyn/Staten Island) will introduce legislation, which would give a $500 annual tax credit to New York City property owners who install and maintain surveillance cameras on their property.
“The number one refrain has been that we need more surveillance cameras. So we want to encourage people who own property to, in fact, install the surveillance cameras at their homes,” Hikind told
The lawmakers said surveillance videos that showed Kletzky walking down the street and another one in which the boy was allegedly seen with his accused killer was integral in tracking down Levi Aron, who has pleaded not guilty to murder and kidnapping charges.
“If we had more surveillance cameras, we could have traced Leiby literally within minutes — his tracks. So this is one of many initiatives that will come forward to try to do more to protect our children,” Hikind said.
Hikind said the tax credit idea is a “no-brainer” and something that lawmakers were “going to try to make happen.”
“I can’t imagine why anyone would have a problem with this. There’s work to be done, but this is something that just makes common sense,” he said.
