NY man, 2-year-old killed in home horror, shooter on loose

A police officer walks near vehicles on Renninger Road in Douglass Township as he arrives at the fatal shooting.

An East Village man and a 2-year-old boy were killed in a horrific home shooting in rural Pennsylvania, authorities said today.

Joseph Shay, 43, of East 10th Street and Gregory Erdmann, 2, of Fall River, Mass., were fatally shot in the head during the attack in Bechtelsville late last night, Montgomery County prosecutors said.

It’s unclear what sparked the shooting. Police said they are hunting for at least one gunman.

Also shot and critically wounded were the boy’s mother, Kathryn Erdmann, 37, and homeowners Paul Shay, 64, and Monica Shay, 58. The Shays split time between Pennsylvania and Joseph Shay’s East 10th Street apartment, neighbors said.

Paul Shay is Joseph Shay’s uncle, and the pair ran a Brooklyn plumbing business together.

Joseph Shay’s East Village neighbors recalled a loud argument he had with an unknown man 1½ weeks ago. One neighbor said the shouting ended with Shay trying to apologize: “It seemed like he screwed up but didn’t want to admit it.”
