The San Jose Mercury News reports that 35-year-old Kariem McFarlin, of Alameda, has been arrested and charged with residential burglary and selling stolen property in connection to the July 17 incident at the Apple co-founder’s residence.
McFarlin — who was likely unaware of the home’s significance, according to Santa Clara County Prosecutor Tom Flattery — remains jailed with bail set at $500,000 pending an Aug. 20 court hearing.
"The best we can tell is it was totally random," Flattery told the newspaper about the crime.
Flattery declined to indicate whether the items taken from the home in the 2100 block of Waverly Street in Palo Alto belonged to Jobs or another family member. The house was surrounded by a temporary construction barrier at the time.
Jobs died last year at the age of 56.
Bay Area cities, according to the newspaper, have seen double-digit increase in burglaries during the first half of 2012. Police in Palo Alto attributed the city's 63 percent surge to unlocked doors and windows.
