Israeli Men Plot To Blackmail NY Orthodox Rabbi

Two men from central Israel face charges of extortion and conspiracy to commit a crime after they hatched a plot to seduce and blackmail a New York City rabbi, according to an indictment presented to the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to the indictment, Shai Cohen, 37, of Beit Dagan and Simon Suriana, 38, of Tel Aviv, recruited two young women to contact the New York rabbi and seduce him into a personal encounter, where they could photograph the rabbi in a compromising position, and use the photos to blackmail him.

The indictment alleges that back in June, Cohen came up with the plot to blackmail the rabbi, who he had a previous acquaintance with. He then contacted Suriana and the two men came up with a plan to use two women “B.B.” and “G.G.” to snare the rabbi.

Cohen reportedly offered B.B. $20,000 to take part in the plan, which first required her to send a picture of herself half-naked to the rabbi, and request he meet with her privately.

G.G., for her part, was offered “a salary for the rest of her life” by Cohen, according to the indictment, before she herself fell victim to a blackmail attempt by Cohen.

The indictment reads that after Cohen recruited G.G., he filmed her performing oral sex on him and threatened to release the video on the internet and to her boyfriend in Las Vegas if she pulled out of the blackmail plan.

He also reportedly threatened to cause her bodily harm.

B.B. was told by Cohen to contact the rabbi and tell him she wants to convert to Judaism and meet with him privately to discuss the matter.

Along the way, Cohen and Suriana tried to snare the rabbi in compromising positions and record him on the telephone speaking to the women, all to no avail.

Eventually, in mid-July both G.G. and B.B. went separately to the police and informed them and the rabbi of the plot. Both Cohen and Suriana were arrested shortly thereafter and now face a series of extortion and conspiracy charges.

The District Attorney’s office on Monday issued a request to keep alleged mastermind Cohen in jail until the end of his trial, saying "there is good reason to suspect that he poses a threat to the safety of the public."

במסגרת הקשר הפלילי פנה סוריאנו תחילה לצעירה ב' ופרש בפניה, ביחד עם כהן, את תכנית הפיתוי והסחיטה: לפי אותה תכנית היה עליה לשוחח עם הרב, לפרוש בפניו את רצונה לעבור גיור, ובכך לבקש את עזרתו. כהן צילם את ב' בעירום חלקי ושלח את התמונות לרב לצורך פיתויו. מאוחר יותר, מתוך חרטה, בחרה ב' שלא להמשיך את הקשר הפלילי. היא הודיעה על כך לנאשמים ואף שוחחה עם הרב וסיפרה לו על המזימה הפלילית. בעקבות כך קיבלה ב' איומים על חייה מכהן. הנאשמים הציעו לה 20 אלף דולר עבור חלקה בתכנית.

בנוסף לכך פנה כהן לצעירה נוספת, ג', והציע לה גם להשתתף בתכנית הקשר הפלילי במטרה לסחוט את הרב. וזאת, תמורת "משכורת לכל החיים". לפי התכנית היה עליה להגיע לקשר אינטימי עם הרב ולצלמו. באותה בעת, טוענת התביעה, סחט כהן את ג' בעזרת סרטון בו הם נראו מקיימים יחסי מין. ואולם, בשלב מסוים גם צעירה זו התחרטה והחליטה שלא להמשיך את הקשר הפלילי. משחשד בה כהן הוא הניע אותה שלא תפנה למשטרה שכן אחרת הוא יפיץ את הסרטון ברשת האינטרנט.

התובע עו"ד צחי הבדלי מבקש לעצור את כהן, בעל ארבע הרשעות פליליות, עד לתום ההליכים מפני שחלקו בתכנית הפלילית גדול יותר והוא גם "הוגה ויוזם הקשר". ביחס לסוריאנו מסתפקת התובע במתן ערביות להבטחת התייצבותו למשפט.
