New images of man wanted in Westport homicide of Yekutiel Zeevi

Westport police released this surveillance photo of a man they say killed Yekutiel Zeevi, 65, the owner of Y.Z. Jewelry Manufacturing in Westport during a robbery.

The picture is one of the images captured by the surveillance cameras just prior to the robbery and shooting at 413 Post Road East, Thursday December 8th, 2011. The suspect is described as a white male, appearing to be in his 40's, 3 or 4 days of facial hair growth, short salt and pepper colored hair, approximately 5' 10 inches tall, wearing a black driving cap, black framed glasses, blue jeans, brown cowboy boots, and having a blue or green two tone jacket with a light colored stripe.

The suspect in the killing of the owner of a Westport custom jewelry business was photographed by a video surveillance camera on his way to an appointment with the jeweler late Thursday shortly before the homicide, police said Friday as they released more details about the man.

The suspect -- whose identity has not been released -- had at least one other appointment a day earlier at Y.Z. Jewelry Manufacturing in the Compo Shopping Center on Post Road East, where owner Yekutiel Zeevi, 65, was shot and killed about 10 p.m. Thursday and an associate was critically injured.

By late Friday afternoon, police said the identity and whereabouts of the suspect remained unknown.

They described the man as a white male, about 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall, in his early to mid-40s, with short salt-and-pepper hair, several days of facial hair growth, and wearing black-frame glasses, dark wool driving cap, a two-toned blue or aqua marine green jacket, and footwear that looked like cowboy boots

He is believed to have fled the scene in a "boxy" blue, four-door vehicle, police said.

Zeevi's business associate -- Ronen Konfino, 48, of New York City -- was reported to be in stable condition Friday in Norwalk Hospital, and has been able to help police with their investigation, according to Westport Police Chief Dale Call.

Konfino, whose identity was released at noontime press conference, is a vice president of A.N. Frieda Diamonds.

"We're confident that he was no longer in the area by the time we got there," Call said of the suspect at a Friday press conference.

"Right now, we're working under the assumption that it was a robbery," he added.

The suspect had apparently visited the jewelry business Wednesday afternoon, possibly to look into buying diamonds from the business, police said.

Police were alerted to the incident by a call from Konfino reporting an armed robbery. They were not notified by a burglar alarm.

Responding officers had to force entry into the jewelry business. EMTs arrived on scene shortly after.

Zeevi was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

Westport lawyer Bruce Koffsky is representing the dead man's family, but declined comment Friday morning.

Call confirmed that video surveillance is being used to guide the investigation and that technicians from the State Police are working with the security company to analyze the tape.

Two video surveillance systems were in operation at the time of shooting -- one in the jewelry store and another in the general office complex.

However, the older surveillance system in the store was "requiring a lot more effort than originally expected" to extract useful images, Call said.

Late Friday afternoon, police said they had sent the video surveillance to the state crime lab for enhancement.

"We pride ourselves on having a safe community where people look out for each other," the chief said. "It's tragic, there's no other way of looking at it."

Eddie Elias, a family friend of Zeevi, said Friday the murdered man was kind and friendly.

"He had a love for his friends an the community of Westport, said Elias, 52, of Westport, who said he had visited with Zeevi's family Friday morning after hearing the news.

"When I heard, I was in shock," Elias said. "The first thing I did was go home and hug my wife."

"This is a big, big loss," he said. "It is unfair that this happened to this kind of a person."

Zeevi, who had run the jewelry business for about three decades, and his family were members of Temple Israel in Westport.

The funeral for Yekutiel Zeevi will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the synagogue.

"He could be a very gruff, kind of a bear of a man," said Rabbi Robert Orkand of Temple Israel. "But, at the same time, there was a very loving, caring side to him. He absolutely adored his wife Nava."

The family was "kind of in and out as members over the years, but they were very connected to the Jewish community," Orkand added.
