Fake Beard Gunman Fires At NYPD Officer

gunman wearing a fake beard open fired on two rookie cops in Queens yesterday, sending a bullet flying into a nearby dental office packed with kids, authorities said.

The burst of gunfire erupted at 3:55 p.m. near 37th Road and 76th Street in Jackson Heights, where the officers on foot patrol were alerted to the oddly dressed bearded man wearing a dark trench coat, hat and sunglasses and acting suspiciously, sources said.

The cops asked him to take his hands out of his pockets, and tried to force him to comply, one source said. When he did, he had a deadly surprise for the officers.

“They kept asking him to take his hands out of his pocket, and after a struggle, he pulled one out and just opened fire point-blank,” a source told The Post.

“All hell broke loose,” another source added.

Police officials said two shots were fired — with one whizzing past the children in the nearby clinic.

One “went into the dentist’s office that was filled with kids,” a source told The Post.

Another source called the mayhem “a cop’s worst nightmare,” sending the rookies diving for cover as the lunatic bolted, shedding his phony beard, sunglasses and hat along the way. The shooter remained at large last night.

The neighborhood filled with cops after the stunned officers called for backup, said limo driver Francisco Sala.

“This is not the first time a shooting like this happened here,” said outraged City Councilman Daniel Dromm, calling the corner “a sad, dangerous symbol of urban decay.”

The suspect was described as a male in his 30s standing about 5-foot-9.

Investigators last night released a surveillance video of the suspect — without his disguise.
