SPRING VALLEY — Police shot and killed a man after being called to investigate a disturbance at a downtown restaurant.

The victim, a 48-year-old village resident, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident began about 3 a.m. when police were called to El Buen Gusto bar and restaurant at 11 Furman Ave., Spring Valley Detective Sgt. James Noble said.

The victim, who police said was violent, combative and armed with a weapon, allegedly fought with the responding officer, who then fired his weapon.

The officer was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was treated and released.

Meanwhile, a crowd of Haitian-American residents were gathering this morning in a parking lot across from the restaurant to express anger at the shooting of the man, whose name is reportedly Herve Gilles. Some said Gilles was known for having emotional problems but was not dangerous.

District Attorney Thomas Zugibe is investigating.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 845-356-7400.

  1. I knew Herve and he never exhibited any violent behavior. If cops were to kill all mentally challenged people in this country, millions of people would be six feet under. People who are e justifying the execution of the poor guy are obviously racist and think that a black person's life is of little value.
I have never heard of a white person being shot so crudely by a cop and we all know it's always black folks who are always victims of these"accidents" or "misunderstandings" whether in NYC or elsewhere. How do you justify shooting an unarmed person in the back ?
The community is mobilizing to give an appropriate answer to the Spring Valley Police, a force that has been abusive to members of this community in the past. It is a wake-up call for all of us to know that their motto is not "to protect and to serve" but “to maim and kill"
