Police on Long Island investigating a suspected serial killer case have found property that belonged to a missing New Jersey woman.
Officers searching thick underbrush near the beach on Tuesday found a pocketbook containing an ID card belonging to Shannan Gilbert, a prostitute who vanished May 1, 2010, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer.
Gilbert, 24, of Jersey City, was last seen at a client's home in Oak Beach.
Then Wednesday police returned to the area and found a pair of jeans and a cell phone.
Officers have not found her body, but believe it is probably nearby. They believe she may have drowned in a marsh.
As to why cops didn't find the items earlier, Dormer said the very thick underbrush was tough to navigate, which is why police resumed their search now in the winter when the brush is thinner.
The original search for Gilbert resulted in the amazing and disturbing discovery of the bodies of 10 people along several miles of highway along the shore of a barrier island.
"If it wasn't for Shannan Gilbert's disappearance we may never have found the remains of the other victims," Dormer said at a news conference on Wednesday.
He said he believes a serial killer is responsible for their deaths, but Gilbert's disappearance may not be connected.
