An ax-wielding Palestinian man was shot dead by agents of the Shin Bet security agency in the northern West Bank on Monday.
According to Hebrew media reports, the man, who was driving a car on the road between the settlements of Shavei Shomron and Einav, rammed into a vehicle in which the agents were driving, causing the car to flip over.
At that point, the man got out of his car and charged the agents with an ax, yelling “Allahu Akbar” and slightly injuring two of the vehicle’s passengers before the agents shot and killed him. The two were treated by an MDA team at the scene and taken to Beilinson Medical Center in Petah Tikva.
Police said the suspects, who are to be remanded at the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court, were likely to have been involved in other incidents of what they called “ideological crimes.”
The last month has seen an upsurge in violent clashes between soldiers and Palestinians in the West Bank, as well as frequent stoning and firebombing attacks on Israeli vehicles.
During Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli woman was critically injured in a stoning attack on the road near the West Bank Palestinian village of Husan.
In an earlier, unrelated incident on Monday, Judea and Samaria District Police arrested three settlers suspected of conducting a “price tag” operation in the Arab West Bank town of Dahariya, south of Hebron.
The three men, each around 20 years old, are residents of Beit El, Kiryat Arba and Yakir, according to Walla News. The three were picked up in a vehicle shortly after a car was torched and pro-settler graffiti was found in Dahariya.
In the car, police found a modified M-16 rifle, ski masks, gloves, spray cans, firewood and caltrops (anti-vehicular spikes).
