Swedish queen injured trying to escape photographer in New York

Sweden's Queen Silvia was injured trying to escape a photographer while shopping in New York, with the Royal Court on Wednesday accusing the snapper of stalking her.

The Queen was shopping with her daughter Princess Madeleine in New York on Tuesday when the incident with the photographer, who was working for a Swedish tabloid, took place.

"It's not a question of her simply wanting to avoid being photographed. It's more akin to stalking," a Royal Court spokesman told the Expressen newspaper.

Photographs of her using a cane and wearing a brace were published in the Swedish media Wednesday.

In a statement reported by the Swedish TT news agency, the Royal Court said the photographer refused to acknowledge the Queen's desire for privacy and hung around the entrance to the store.

Queen Silvia opted to leave the Madison Avenue store through a side door, and walked briskly to her car to avoid the photographer who chased after her.

"Unfortunately, the Queen then fell, injuring both her foot and wrist," the statement said.

Silvia, who is married to King Carl XVI Gustaf, was in New York for a series of events connected to her World Childhood Foundation, which raises money for impoverished children
