Man posing as disabled person allegedly found to have marijuana in wheelchair
A 19-year-old man posing as a disabled person was allegedly found to have five pounds of marijuana stuffed under the seat of a wheelchair at the San Ysidro border crossing, U.S. authorities said Monday.
The suspect, Donte Jonae Damas, looked nervous when a drug-sniffing dog approached him at the port of entry’s pedestrian processing area.
The dog alerted customs officers, who allegedly found the marijuana tightly wrapped in three packages under his seat, authorities said.
Damas is an able-bodied U.S. citizen, officials said.
“He didn’t need the wheelchair,” said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "It was just a ploy to distract the inspectors."
