3 more bodies found on Long Island beach believed to be serial killer dumping ground; total at 8

8 Sets Of Remains Now Found On Beach: MyFoxNY.com

A Long Island beach yielded new horrors Monday: three more sets of human remains discovered in what police believe is a serial killer's dumping ground.

That brings to eight the number of bodies found between Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach in Suffolk County since December.

Four have been identified as hookers who advertised on Craigslist and other websites: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 25; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; and Amber Costello, 27.

They were reportedly concealed in burlap.

A fifth set of remains was found last week but has not been identified or linked to the earlier ones.

Police were re-canvassing the area when they found three more sets of remains in the dense undergrowth along the beach. They reportedly were also in burlap.

All of the remains were found while cops were searching for Shannan Gilbert, a Jersey City, N.J., prostitute who disappeared after fleeing the nearby home of a john.

Police said they should be able to determine if she is one of the victims quickly because of DNA and distinctive physical characteristic.

Suffolk County Chief of Detectives Dominick Varrone said the search was difficult. Officers were infected with poison ivy, and cadaver-sniffing dogs couldn't maneuver through the brush.

"They don't like getting smacked in the face with the bramble," he said.

Investigators will resume their search Tuesday.

"We still believe that Shannan Gilbert is in this area," Varrone said.

  1. It's sad that they have come to their end in such a horrific way. Time to start scoping out those beaches for unusual activity.
