Williamsburg - Hatzalah Paramedic Robbed at Gunpoint

Father and son paramedics working for a private EMS service were briefly taken hostage in Brooklyn Friday by an armed bandit who robbed them and drove off in their work vehicle, police sources said.

The suspect, on the hunt about 10:30 this morning, followed his marks, a 51-year-old man and his 17-year-old son, as they entered a building on Johnson Ave. near White St. in East Williamsburg, the sources and one of the victims said.

Father and son work as paramedics for Hatzolah, the emergency medical service catering to the Jewish community throughout the city. They had parked their Hatzolah vehicle on the street before entering the building.

Once inside, the suspect cuffed the father and son to a chair and riffled through their pockets. He took their money and the keys to the Hatzolah ride, a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu equipped with emergency lights, the sources said.

Leaving the father and son chair-bound, the suspect jumped inside the Malibu and sped off. The Father and son managed to call for help.

Police later found the Malibu but not the suspect. The car had been ditched several blocks to the north of the stick-up, on Meeker Ave., along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the sources said.

The suspect was still in the wind as of early Friday afternoon. Police sources said the wanted man is a Latino estimated to be in his 50s, but a fuller description was not immediately available.
