Secret Service tightens White House security

The Secret Service tightened security outside the White House on Monday afternoon as President Obama began directing his administration’s response to the deadly blasts at the Boston Marathon.

The security agency lined Pennsylvania Ave. outside the White House with security tape and was keeping onlookers across the street, an NBC News reporter said.

A White House official said Obama was notified about the explosions about 3 p.m.

Shortly thereafter, he was briefed by Homeland Security adviser Lisa Monaco and other members of his senior White House staff in the Oval Office.

“The President called Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to express his concern for those who were injured and to make clear that his administration is ready to provide needed support as they respond to the incident,” the official said.
