After a month and a half of arduous efforts Chabad Chossid Rabbi Eliyahu Hecht, who languishes in a Madrid jail, finally had his palate make contact with some Kosher food.

Weeks of grueling diplomacy, which climaxed with the intervention of Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and members of the Madrid Jewish community, finally bore fruit.

The jail's administration sent a prison guard into the city to buy two weeks worth of food from the local Kosher grocery.

Hecht faces charges of drug-trafficking after naively transporting a suitcase for his host back in Costa Rica whose lining contained illicit substances.

The lawyer dealing with the case asked to give over that individuals sending letters to the Madrid prison facility only hinder Eli's cause.

  1. In cities with smaller Jewish populations, kosher dining is often limited to just a single establishment. Some cities do not have any kosher dine-in facilities, but the small communities have other arrangements for Jewish residents to obtain ready-made kosher meals and other types of food that may be hard to obtain kosher otherwise.
