Police investigating what drove 74-year-old woman to snap, shoot 17-year-old grandson to death

Crime scene: Police stand outside the house of a 74-year-old woman who allegedly murdered her teen grandson

Michigan police are investigating what drove a 74-year-old woman to allegedly shoot her 17-year-old grandson to death at the home they shared on Friday night.

Police in West Bloomfield didn't release their names.

Cops arrived at the gated condo complex northwest of Detroit at around 5:30 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing gunshots, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The teen -- who had also managed to call 911 -- had several gunshot wounds and was rushed to Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, where he was pronounced dead at around 6 p.m, police said.

The grandmother spent the night at another hospital under police watch "because of her age and the circumstances," West Bloomfield Police Lt. Tim Diamond told the newspaper.

Diamond said she would be arrested once she was cleared by the hospital.

A handgun was found at the scene.

The boy's parents were from Arizona, the Free Press said, and neighbors said he moved in with his grandmother and her husband about six months ago.

The pair had feuded before.

Police reports showed that cops visited the condo in March on a domestic violence call and found the two in a verbal dust-up.

"It was your typical teenager-parent argument," Diamond told the Free Press.

Cops don’t know what started Friday’s argument.

Police were waiting to notify the boy's parents before releasing his and the grandmother’s names. “It's a tragic situation no matter how it ends up," Diamond told The Detroit News. "There is still [so\] much investigation to go."
