Supreme Court Justice's [Shabbos] Candles Stolen

United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer's home was burglarized, and a pair of silver candlesticks was stolen. Since he is Jewish, we will go ahead and assume that the candlesticks were Shabbos candles.

WASHINGTON — For the second time this year, Justice Stephen G. Breyer has been the victim of a burglary.

Justice Breyer’s Washington home was broken into recently, the Supreme Court spokeswoman, Kathy Arberg, said Thursday. No one was home at the time, she said. A housekeeper discovered the burglary on May 4.

In February, Justice Breyer, 73, was robbed when a man carrying a machete entered his Caribbean vacation home.

Justices primarily rely on the court’s security team for protection in Washington, leaving them relatively exposed compared with the heavily guarded officials on Capitol Hill and at the White House. When justices travel outside Washington, the United States Marshals Service is responsible for their security.

The burglaries are not the first crimes committed against a member of the court. Justice David H. Souter was assaulted while jogging in 2004, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the victim of a purse-snatching in 1996.

A police spokeswoman, Gwendolyn Crump, confirmed that the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the burglary. She declined to comment further because it is an open investigation.
