Baltimore - Shomrim Trial delayed as reporter faints

Defendant delivers aid before emergency workers arrive

One of the Baltimore brothers being tried on charges of assaulting a teenager while working with a Jewish neighborhood watch group came to the aid a reporter who passed out in the courtroom this morning.

Avi Werdesheim, 22, checked the vital signs of Baltimore Sun reporter Tricia Bishop before emergency workers responded. She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released.

Avi Werdesheim, is a pre-med student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Last year, he was working for a private medic unit, and just a day after a court hearing, helped provide aid to a man stabbed at a city bus stop.

The trial of Avi and Eliyahu Werdesheim, 24, was delayed during Tuesday's incident, but continued later in the morning as prosecutors continued to present witnesses. The brothers are charged with assaulting Corey Ausby, 16, in the Park Heights area of Northwest Baltimore in November, 2010.

The case, which has highlighted tensions between some black and Jewish city residents, has also drawn comparisons to the recent killing of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot walking through a gated Florida community. Ausby is black, while the Werdesheims are white.
