A member of the Secret Service hit and killed a Brooklyn mother of five Thursday as she crossed a busy intersection while on her way to pick up her granddaughter from day care, police sources and witnesses said.
Maria Tripp, 47, of Chauncey Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, was walking across Atlantic Ave. at Ralph Ave. with her daughter and nephew at 4:48 p.m. when a black Chevrolet Impala barreled into her, police said.
"They were just crossing the street and the mother got hit,” said one witness who did not want to be named. “She went up like 50 feet in the air ,” he continued.
“She hit the ground and she wasn't moving at all. She was messed up, she was unconscious. "
“I saw her body on the sidewalk,” said Lisa Jones, 61, a nurse’s assistant. “She was face-down and oh my God, the blood. ”
Multiple witnesses described the car jumping the sidewalk in front of a Hess gas station, with both tires on the right side of the vehicle getting blown out.
"The girl was screaming, she was crying. She was hysterical, someone had to calm her down,” the witness said.
Tripp was walking with her 12-year-old daughter and 19-year-old nephew at the time, family and witnesses said. When they spotted the vehicle trying to make the light, the nephew pulled the girl out of harm’s way, witnesses said.
Tripp was taken to Interfaith Hospital where she died, according to cops.
“She was a loving and caring mother,” said relative Don Wingate, 60, a retired police sergeant. “It’s a very tragic situation, it’s been very traumatic. The kids are going through a lot of pain.”
The driver of the sedan remained at the scene, police said, and no criminality was suspected.
