Ruth Madoff, above visiting her husband at Metropolitan Correctional Center in 2009, is believed to be in Old Greenwich after moving from Florida
Ruth Madoff has moved closer to her family — and cut off her husband.
The 71-year-old wife of Bernie Madoff has not talked to her spouse for a good six months — about the same time that she quietly relocated from Boca Raton, Fla., to Old Greenwich, Conn., to spend more time with her family.
Ruth confirmed that she was living in an Old Greenwich house provided by her surviving son, Andrew.
“I’ve moved back to the New York area for one reason: to spend time with my family, particularly Andy and my grandchildren, whom I love dearly,” she said.
“This has been a healing period for me,” she added.
In her statement, Ruth admitted the four years prior to her return to the New York area “have been terribly difficult.”
Referring to the December 2011 suicide of her son Mark, she said, “I lost a son whom I loved dearly. I don’t talk to Bernie anymore, and I find it so hard to reconcile my feelings for the man I was married to for over 50 years,” she said. “Despite this, I’ve chosen to move forward with my life and focus on my remaining family, particularly my grandchildren.”
Madoff, reached through her attorney, Peter Chavkin, moved to Florida after her now 73-year-old husband’s $65 billion Ponzi scheme landed him a 150-year prison sentence and forced her into exile.
As part of an agreement with the trustee representing thousands of customers scammed by Bernie, the Madoffs gave up their upper East Side penthouse and luxurious homes in Long Island and Palm Beach.
In the aftermath of the scandal — reportedly the largest financial fraud in U.S. history — Ruth also was banished from the monied social circles that she and her husband once inhabited. Many of their friends had also been Bernie’s trusting clients.
In February 2011, People magazine reported Ruth was living with her sister Joan Roman and Roman’s husband in their Boca Raton condo, and occasionally in a rent-free home provided by friends.
Even her sister was a victim of Bernie’s Ponzi scheme. She and her husband lost millions and, People reported, were operating a car service to make ends meet.
According to the magazine, she dyed her blond hair red, drove around an old clunker and lived a frugal, low-key existence.
Shortly after the Madoff sons turned their father into the authorities, they reportedly demanded that their mother cut him out of her life. When she initially refused — in part, because Bernie had been hurt in prison in late 2009 — Mark and Andrew didn’t talk to her for years.
Her relationship with her surviving son has thawed considerably since then.
Asked if she still feels like she’s living a life in exile, Madoff said: “I know that people are understandably furious with Bernie, but I am not without friends — old and new — and I’ve got my family.”
