Search crews have found the bodies of a missing hiker and her dog under a cliff in a state park in Rockland County on Tuesday. She apparently went hiking there Sunday.

Detective Sgt. Timothy O'Neill of the Clarkstown Police said a dog search team found Colleen Murphy Tuesday evening. She had apparently fallen about 300 feet from a cliff at Rockland Lake State Park in Congers. Murphy was wearing snow shoes.

The body of her dog, Jemma, was also found nearby.

Police dog teams and helicopers spent the day searching the park after Murphy's father, who lives in Florida, called police Tuesday morning to check on his daughter. She lived alone in Valley Cottage.

Cops said Murphy had sent a text message to a friend on Sunday saying she was going hiking, but then never checked in with anyone.

She often hiked at Rockland Lake, police said, so cops began there. They quickly found Murphy's Chevrolet Cavalier across from a firehouse near the entrance to a hiking trail.

Police said some of the trails are narrower than normal and covered with ice and snow.

"This is called Hook Mountain, at certain levels it is quite high off the banks of the Hudson River," Sergeant O'Neill said earlier Tuesday, before Murphy was found. In the past people have fallen off a cliff and into the Hudson, he said.
