NJ State Police Investigate Car Shootings

Police block off portions of Rt. 29 Northbound after a shooting and several motor vehicle accidents.

TRENTON — One man was fatally shot while driving north along Route 29 last night, while, in a related incident, two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided on the same northbound stretch of highway, police said.

The bizarre events happened after 6 p.m. opposite the Statehouse, near Market Street and Memorial Drive, police said.

The highway was shut down for hours in the northbound direction after police discovered a man with a fatal gunshot wound sitting lifeless in his car, which had come to rest in the northbound lanes and appeared battered from a crash.

The sequence and nature of events was unclear late yesterday evening, but another vehicle appeared to have reversed course on Route 29 northbound and headed against the flow of traffic, leading to a collision with an oncoming vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Mercer County Prosecutor Joe Bocchini confirmed a homicide took place on Route 29 where the highway intersects with Memorial Drive.

Trenton Police Sgt. Benito Bello confirmed that the shooting victim was in his vehicle driving along the highway when he was killed.

Officials and investigators from the New Jersey State Police and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office worked side by side with city detectives last night.

The shooting victim was found in his vehicle on the Route 29 northbound overpass for Memorial Drive. Police vehicles had surrounded a white sedan that appeared to have been involved in a crash and had spun around.

The second crash took place in the northbound lanes just short of the Market Street exit.

City police officers searched the highway and nearby exit ramps for evidence.
No arrests were made as of 10 p.m. yesterday, Bello said.

Officials at Capital Health Regional Medical Center said that no patients with gunshot wounds were admitted in connection with the incident.

Trenton Fire Battalion Chief Frank Seidel said that firefighters were dispatched to the location to assist the victim of a crash, but their services were not required and they turned the scene over to police investigators.

Bello declined to provide any additional information on the incident, saying only that “detectives are hot on the case.”

The homicide was the third Trenton killing so far this year.
