Julio Acevedo, Hit-&-run horror at 70 mph: DA Hynes

The hit-run driver who killed an Orthodox couple and their newborn baby was going nearly 70 mph — more than twice the speed limit — when he crashed into their livery cab, the Brooklyn DA said yesterday adding three manslaughter counts against him.

Julio Acevedo, 44, could face life in prison for the crash that killed Nachman Glauber and his pregnant wife Raizy, both 21, earlier this month. The couple’s unborn son was delivered prematurely but died the next day.

Prosecutors said Acevedo recklessly sped past other cars and a fire truck before the deadly Williamsburg crash. The career criminal had previously been indicted only on charges of leaving the scene.

“While we knew it was a snowy evening and the defendant was speeding, our investigation has developed additional information concerning the nature of Mr. Acevedo’s conduct leading up to the fatal crash,” DA Charles Hynes said.

The victims’ families greeted the new charges with mixed feelings.

“This is the best we could expect,” said the dead woman’s uncle, Rabbi Moshe Silberstein, adding: “He can never get what he deserves because he cut away the life of a whole family.”

Defense attorney Kathleen Julian said, “I just hope that the investigation is moving forward with actual facts and not public sentiment and public wishes in this election year.”
