Vandals return to Jewish cemetery

Crystal police are seeking the public's help after a Jewish cemetery in Crystal that has been vandalized in the past was hit again about two weeks ago.

Sometime between April 28 and April 30, 24 monuments were overturned at Adath Chesed Shel Emes Cemetery near Winnetka Avenue and 36th Avenue N.

None of the monuments, since put back into place, was cracked, cemetery superintendent Michael J. Morris said Wednesday. It cost $800 to $1,000 to reposition the markers, but money wasn't the main concern, he added.

"This is an affront to our tradition and heritage," he said.

Vandals toppled 147 monuments at the cemetery in 2003. Eighty-five markers were overturned there in 1993.

Crystal Deputy Police Chief Stephanie Fealy said that while Winnetka can be a busy road, the cemetery is set back, away from easy public view. The recent vandalism also is believed to have occurred at night, further complicating a search for witnesses, she said.

Anyone with information about the April vandalism is asked to call police at 763-531-1020
