Ex-Jewish community leader jailed 45 days for child porn

MONTREAL—A former Quebec director of B’nai Brith has received the minimum 45-day jail term after earlier pleading guilty to a child pornography charge.

Bill Surkis will serve the time on weekends, beginning this Saturday.

A judge ruled in Montreal today that Surkis must also do 240 hours of community service and be on probation for three years.

The Crown and defence both agreed the 71-year-old Surkis should receive the minimum sentence allowed by law.

The former Jewish community leader pleaded guilty in May to possessing child pornography after he turned himself in to police a year earlier.

Police found 21 videos on his computer, with some depicting girls between the ages of six and 14 engaging in sex with adults.

The Crown wanted to have Surkis declared a registered sex offender, but the judge decided not to put him on the national registry and also did not order a DNA sample to be taken.

During his sentencing hearing in October, the grandfather expressed remorse and told court he was totally devastated

  1. Halachically speaking I think that his Jewishness should be suspect as that organization has been assimilated more than a few generations, and the root cause of it began in the 1800s. I believe the text should allege his "Jewishness" I doubt that it would be possible to "go back four generations"
