NEWARK, N.J. — A federal jury has been given the case of a New Jersey defense attorney on trial for murder and racketeering.
Paul Bergrin has been jailed since his May 2009 arrest and faces life in prison if convicted on the most serious counts of a 33-count indictment. An earlier trial on two murder counts severed from the broader indictment ended in a mistrial.
Bergrin's second trial has been under way for eight weeks in Newark. On Thursday the jury began deliberations.
Bergrin is accused of plotting with a government informant posing as a hit man to murder witnesses against one of Bergrin's clients.
The U.S. Attorney's Office also alleges Bergrin used his law office to run a racketeering enterprise that engaged in drug trafficking, prostitution, bribery, witness tampering and money laundering.
