Boston, MA - A kosher caterer is one of several businesses that were destroyed this morning by a four alarm blaze that broke out in the Brighton section of Boston.
The fire, whose cause is still unknown, began at approximately 5:30 AM this morning in Boston House of Pizza located on Chestnut Hill Avenue. Four businesses are housed in the strip mall including a laundromat, a janitorial supply company and Ora Catering, a glatt kosher caterer.
Rouvain Bension, who owns Ora Catering together with his wife, was contacted at 7 AM this morning by the authorities.
We got there about 7:30 this morning,” Bension told. “The pizza store was engulfed in a cloud of boiling smoke and the laundromat was on fire as well. Our store, which is located at the far end of the building was still okay at that point in time.
Three hours later, when Bension returned to the site, the situation had changed dramatically and according to Boston news site NCEN.com, an explosion at the janitorial supply company only served to feed the fire and create massive amounts of smoke.
When we came back at 10:30 our plate glass window had been smashed in entirely,” reported Bension. “There were two hoses pouring water into our business. The fire seems to have spread along the roofs and there is speculation that the cleaning supplies at one of the businesses were flammable. The back wall of our store was completely gone and we could see that the interior was totally gutted.”
High winds and cold temperatures made fighting the blaze even more difficult. According to Bension, neighbors of the nearby Orthodox community considered it a small miracle that the winds were blowing in the opposite direction, sparing their neighborhood from the fire and smoke.
Several institutions have already offered Bension a temporary location for his business and he hopes to find a permanent home shortly.
Bension, who has insurance for his business, says that there is much to be grateful for.
