Suspicion of voting fraud in the municipal elections: The
police are investigating whether haredim from Beit Shemesh used IDs of Israelis
staying abroad to vote in the local elections.
Eight Beit Shemesh residents were arrested Tuesday under
suspicion of involvement in the act.
Police received intelligence information regarding intent to
use fake IDs or intent to forge election results, prompting police to raid two
apartments in Beit Shemesh, seizing 200 IDs.
The certificates belong to Israelis who are currently
staying abroad and cannot vote in the municipal elections.
A search in both apartments produced not only the IDs, but
also notes containing locations of ballot polls in Beit Shemesh.
Municipal elections are held across Israel on Tuesday.
