It is now being reported that Israel Police used an agent to
incriminate Rabbi Yonah Metzger explaining he was recording the rabbi as they
spoke. Reports state the former chief rabbi basically admitted to charges
leveled against him while the police agent was recording him.
The prosecution’s case seems to be based on Rabbi Metzger’s
travels abroad in his official capacity as chief rabbi. The rabbi allegedly
used those trips to raise money for tzedaka and nonprofit organizations and he
took a cut for his efforts. The money he was paid for his efforts was not
reported to tax authorities.
The rabbi remains in jail as a court earlier this week
extended his remand for an additional week after it accepted police concerns
that the rabbi’s release would permit him to interfere with the ongoing
investigation.
