Omar Bulphred
The mastermind behind the firebombing of an Outremont Jewish boys' school almost six years ago is in trouble with the law again, about a month after being released from prison.
Omar Bulphred, 27, was arraigned last Friday on eight charges, five of them relating to loitering and prowling on private property near someone's home, most of them in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. He's also charged with uttering death threats to a resident in one of those homes.
Bulphred was sentenced in 2009 to seven years in prison for his role in firebombing the Skver-Toldos Orthodox Jewish Boys School in Outremont in September 2006 and trying to set off another firebomb outside the Snowdon YM-YWHA in April 2007. Bulphred and an accomplice wrote letters declaring jihad supporting 18 men arrested in 2006 as suspected terrorists in Toronto.
Bulphred's appearance in court was brief, handled by legal aid because his lawyer wasn't present. He entered a plea of not guilty. Bulphred, wearing glasses and a black polo shirt, appeared calm and impassive.
Bulphred is also charged with two counts of violating his release conditions on June 8, three days before his sentence officially ended, and on July 3. The conditions last for two years, beginning June 4.
This peace bond which was imposed on Bulphred can be used on violent criminals who serve out their whole sentence in prison but show no signs of rehabilitation.
The crown is objecting to Bulphred's release on bail.
