KJ - Voting disruptions in Kiryas Joel; DOJ on the scene

KIRYAS JOEL – Officials in the Village of Kiryas Joel have filed a number of complaints over what they say are violations of election law. A representative of the US Justice Department is on-site observing the elections.

Village officials said poll watchers from a group called United Monroe, which is opposed to the candidates supported by the village, have been harassing and intimidating voters causing some to just walk away before casting their ballots.

Police were called to the village and Republican Elections Commissioner David Green responded to intercede.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office was also notified of the activities.

There have been no other reports of disruptions at other polling places around the region.
