MI - An 18-year-old woman from Chicago died after being hit
by a car early Thursday near South Haven, the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office
said.
Ayala Shulman A''H was walking on 68th Street about a half-mile
south of County Road 388 in Geneva Township at about 12:11 a.m. when she was
struck by a 2002 Toyota Camry driven by Charles Carrigan, 18, of Kalamazoo,
according to a news release.
“During the investigation it was determined that the driver
was traveling south on 68th Street attempting to locate M-43 Highway by using
his GPS when he swerved to miss another pedestrian walking near the edge of the
road with the victim,” the news release said.
"As the driver swerved, his vehicle struck the victim,
who was walking in the road near the center line."
Shulman was treated at the scene by South Haven Area
Emergency Services, transported to South Haven Community Hospital then
airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, according to the news
release.
The sheriff's office said a witness told them he saw two
females walking down 68th Street in the southbound lane and saw Shulman jump
into the next lane and then back into the southbound lane, where she was hit.
“At the time and location of the crash there was patchy
fog,” the news release said. “The road was not illuminated by any street lamps
and the victim pedestrian was wearing black clothing.”
Police said that speed and alcohol were not factors in the
incident. Carrigan told deputies he was driving about 35 to 40 mph in the
55-mph zone and accident reconstructionists confirmed that Carrigan was driving
about 39 mph, the news release said.
A report will be submitted to the county prosecutor upon
completion of the investigation to determine whether charges will be
authorized, the sheriff's office said.
