New Rochelle High School Librarian Faces Felony Sex Charge

Marisa Anton

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — A school librarian has been accused of trying to have an inappropriate relationship with a student. Police said a sting stopped the librarian before she could make her move.

Marisa Anton, 33, was arrested for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student. The stunning news was all anyone was talking about at New Rochelle High School on Thursday.

“She’s a very professional librarian. I would never have thought this would’ve happened — ever,” senior Samantha Cowan told CBS 2′s Lou Young.

New Rochelle Police said one male student was singled out for special attention by Anton in a series of one-on-one electronic communications over the past few months.

“The nature of the e-mails and text messages was of an explicitly sexual nature in an effort to invite him to have sexual conduct with her,” Capt. Joseph Shaller said. “He was uncomfortable and he came and reported it to us.”

The report was made over the weekend so police had the boy contact the librarian and set up a meeting at his house with his parents not home. Police said they arrested Anton when she showed up for the phony date and charged her with disseminating indecent material to a minor — a felony that could get her seven years in prison.

The students she worked with said they aren’t sure how they’re supposed to react.

“I think it’s funny but very inappropriate,” senior Lauren Shapiro said. “You just see her every day and you wouldn’t think something like this would happen in our school.”

“It’s a serious thing. It’s not something that should be laughed at or anything like that,” senior Zerigo Morgado added.

Anton lives about 10 minutes from the high school at a garden apartment in Yonkers. No one was home when CBS 2 stopped by on Thursday.

The school district said Anton was hired more than four years ago and has no previous criminal record. She is now suspended because of her arrest.
