New York, NY - New York City prosecutors say an accountant
has been indicted on charges he stole $1.2 million from an elderly Holocaust
survivor.
Barry Palczewski (pal-CHAF’-ski) was charged with grand
larceny and possession of a forged instrument Friday. Manhattan District
Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. says the 55-year-old worked in the law office of an
attorney put in charge of the victim’s estate several years ago.
The suspect worked as an accountant in the office and
managed the woman’s bank accounts. Prosecutors say he stole more than 100
checks from the woman’s personal account and wrote out checks to himself. They
say the money paid for hot tub repairs and sporting events.
The woman died last May at age 97.
A call to Palczewski’s lawyer was not immediately returned.
