NYPD cop Esther Sanzo killed in crash on Palisades Interstate Parkway

Esther Sanzo and Michael Holmes were married June 18, 2010

NANUET -- A 37-year-old New York Police Department officer was killed in a single-car accident on the Palisades Interstate Parkway early this morning.

Esther Sanzo was driving a black 2008 Ford Edge southbound about 12:45 a.m. when she struck a guide rail in the center median near Exit 8E and was ejected onto the roadway, state police said. The SUV continued traveling until it struck the Route 59 overpass.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The southbound lanes were closed for more than seven hours until police reopened them around 8 a.m.

The state police in Haverstraw are investigating the cause.

Anybody who may have seen the accident is asked to contact Investigator Brendan J. Tumulty Jr. at 845-364-0200.

It was the second fatal crash on the parkway this weekend. A 38-year-old Pomona man died Friday morning after he crashed his minivan into the rear of a moving Orange and Rockland Utilities truck just past Exit 11 in New City, state police said.
