High-profile attorney Gloria Allred hired by Miami face-eating cannibal's girlfriend

Gloria Allred

MIAMI  – Celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred is representing the girlfriend of the Miami face-eating cannibal, it has been revealed.

It is unclear why the high-profile attorney is representing the unidentified woman, with whom Rudy Eugene spent his final night before the savage attack that shocked the nation.

Surveillance video shows the 31-year-old mauling the face of Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man, alongside a busy highway in broad daylight last Saturday.

A witness described Eugene ripping at Poppo's face with his mouth and growling at a Miami police officer who ordered him to get off the homeless man. The officer fatally shot Eugene during the attack.

Eugene's girlfriend, who has not been named, told The Miami Herald that she last saw him on the morning of the attack, when he held his Bible and kissed her goodbye, saying 'I love you.'

Allred, who had represented high-profile names such as Spice Girl Mel B., Tiger Woods' ex Rachel Uchitel and Nicole Brown Simpson's family in the O.J. trial, confirmed to NBC 6 that the woman is her client.

'Yes, I represent her. We have no other comment,' she wrote in an email to the network.

She added to CBS4 that she has no plans to hold a press conference or visit Eugene’s long-time girlfriend in Miami.

Police have not released a motive for the attack which left Poppo in a critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital with his nose, mouth and eyes torn off.

But Eugene’s girlfriend told The Miami Herald that he never used any recreational drugs besides marijuana and was even trying to quit. Eugene would refuse to take over-the-counter medication for headaches and was sweet and well-mannered, she said.

The attack could only be explained by Eugene being drugged or the victim of a Voodoo curse, she said. 'I don’t know how else to explain this,' she said.

'That wasn’t him, that was his body but it wasn’t his spirit. Somebody did this to him,' she said.

'He loved God he always read the Bible he would give you knowledge on the Bible. Everywhere he went his Bible went. When he left he had his Bible in his hand.'
