Shas's spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, slammed Rabbi
David Stav, who is running for the position of chief rabbi and called him
"evil". During his weekly sermon, Rabbi Yosef claimed that Stav is
"dangerous to Judaism" and his appointment to the Chief Rabbinate
would be "as bringing idolatry into the holy temple."
Shas's leader backed the party's Knesset members who
prevented a bill which would allow acting Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar,
who is identified with Shas, to run for another term in office, fearing he
would support Stav's candidacy
