Syrian mortars land in Israel

The clashes between Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces and opposition forces edged closer to Israel Thursday, as three mortar shells fired in Syria landed in Israel's territory.

Two of the shells landed near the border fence, while a third one landed in the Golan Heights community of Alonei HaBashan.

No injuries or damage were reported.

The IDF said that like in several other cases over the past few weeks, the incident was one of misfire and did not target Israel.   Also on Thursday, an IDF force patrolling near the Gaza border came under fire. No injuries or damage were reported; the soldiers returned fire.

On Monday, an IDF patrol vehicle sustained some damage due to Syrian gunfire. The jeep was hit during a routine Golani patrol of the border.

The IDF said that it is believed that the fire was discharged as part of clashes between Syrian security forces and rebels.

Israel filed an official grievance with UNIFIL.
