Tel Aviv - French tourist suspected of rape


A French tourist was arrested Thursday by the Tel Aviv Police on suspicion of raping a 21-year-old French national he met on a plane. He was detained shortly before leaving the country.

The Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court extended the man's remand on Friday morning.

According to a police investigation, the suspect arrived in Israel on a flight from France, during which he sat next to a young French woman. She told him she was planning to make aliyah, while he told her he would be staying in the country for one week of leisure.

In order to economize, the two decided to rent a hotel room together. According to the police, the tourist then gave the young woman what he referred to as a "sleeping pill" to help her fall asleep after the flight.

When the woman woke up, she discovered that she was naked and that the man had disappeared, along with her cell phone, iPad and some other of her belongings. Police suspect that the tourist had raped the woman while she was unconscious.

The woman filed a complaint with the Tel Aviv Police, which managed to locate the tourist shortly before he got on a plane on his way back to France.
