Anthony Marx, 52, was arrested on Sunday after the accident which saw him slam into a sanitation truck
The president of the New York Public Library has been arrested on drunk driving charges after he backed into a parked city vehicle in upper Manhattan.
Anthony Marx, 52, was arrested on Sunday after the East Harlem accident which saw him slam into a sanitation truck.
He pleaded not guilty to aggravated driving while intoxicated at his arraignment on Monday and was released on his own recognizance
Marx's blood-alcohol level at the time of his arrest was tested at a reported 0.19 per cent, more than twice the legal limit of .08.
Sources said Marx was trying to find a way around the New York Marathon route in his 2009 Audi A4 sedan, which is registered to the New York Public Library,
Sanitation worker Franklin Hernandez said he was sitting in his truck on 138th Street, between Madison and Fifth avenues, at approximately 3pm when Marx careened into him.
He told the newspaper: 'He was going pretty fast. He just missed the truck in front of me and then, bam! He smashed into my truck.
'I jumped out, and he tried to put the car in drive - I just stood there in front of him, put my hand up and said, "Do not move that car!"'
Cops on duty at the marathon responded to the scene.
A statement released through a library spokesman on Marx's behalf read: 'I deeply regret embarrassment caused to my family and to The New York Public Library.'
Marx is the former president of Amherst College and a Bronx High School of Science graduate. He joined the library in July.
Marx is due back in court on December 9.
