NYPD Arrest homeless man for rape and assault

NYPD charged a homeless man with raping and attacking a woman in Hudson River Park early this morning, police sources said.

Jonathan Stewart, 25, was slapped with rape, criminal sex act by force, sex abuse , assault and forcible touching charges.

The 21-year-old victim was sitting alone on the bench by Pier 25 at around 5:15 am when a man sat next to her and tried to make small talk.

He then punched her in the face and tried to strangle her before dragging her into a set of nearby bushes, where he raped her, cops said.

The victim tried to fight off her assailant, who fled the scene after the attack, the sources said.

The woman flagged down a Parks Department cop, who broadcast his description over the radio.

NYPD cops quickly arrested Stewart, who matched the woman's description, cops said.

The victim is in stable condition at a hospital.

Stewart was walked from the 1st Precinct station house this evening, and where he kept his face down and didn’t say a word.

As he was led away, he kept reaching for his waistband to keep his unbuckled black jeans from falling down.

The attack was the second brutal sex assault in as many weeks in a city park.

An elderly birdwatcher was raped in broad daylight near the Strawberry Fields section of Central Park last week by a career criminal with a history of attacks against older women, cops said.
