Holy Chic! Women dish on how they keep their makeup going through the Sabbath

New York - From substituting a Sharpie pen for eyeliner, to sleeping with a sock on their head to keep their hair in place, Orthodox women continue to push the boundaries of their imaginations when it comes to finding ways to stay “chic” during Shabbat.

The NEW YORK POST  reports that while many beauty secrets are handed down from generation to generation, other Orthodox women have taken to sharing tips on the Internet, through websites like Ladymama.org and fashion-isha.com.

The trick to staying “chic,” they say, is to find both suitable cosmetic products that are “long lasting,” and combine them with creative “enhancement” techniques that allow women to keep their make-up and hair looking “fresh.”

Some women sip soup through a straw to preserve their lipstick, while others use what they call the ‘drag queen’ method of applying layer after layer of foundation, followed by a soaking coat of heavy-duty hairspray to hermetically seal their look.

Many Orthodox women say women outside the faith could learn a lot from their methods.
