HONOLULU -- A federal agent charged with shooting a man dead in a Honolulu McDonald's was in Hawaii to help protect President Barack Obama and other dignitaries attending an international summit this week.
Christopher Deedy, 27, a special agent with the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, is accused of fatally shooting Kailua man Kollin Elderts, 23, on Saturday, according to the Hawaii Reporter.
Deedy, who was released Monday after posting $250,000 bail, was assigned to help with security at this week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) convention, which is set to be attended by delegations from 21 countries, and the US President.
Local attorney Michael Green, who is representing Elderts' family, said there was a verbal altercation between the two men and Deedy apparently karate-kicked Elderts in the chest. Elderts then slapped Deedy, who responded by firing three shots, including a fatal shot to Deedy's chest, the lawyer said.
Sources told the newspaper that Deedy fired the shots after Elderts threatened to "gut" him with a knife.
Deedy remained at the scene after the shooting and was helping to resuscitate Elderts when cops arrived, a source added.
Deedy was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17.
Police have not disclosed any other details of the investigation.
