MOUNT KISCO - Yeshiva Farm Home Damaged by Electrical Fire on Friday night

MOUNT KISCO — A family of three was displaced Friday night when an electrical fire caused by an extenstion cord ripped through the second story of their home on Nitra Road, authorities said.

About 60 firefighters from nearly a half dozen departments responded to 18 Nitra Road about 9:50 p.m. Friday after the family living in the home discovered the fire and notified authorities, Mount Kisco Fire Chief Tom Jackson said.

“It was a little tough to fight it because it was just a heavy smoke condition that hadn’t really vented itself when we got here,” Jackson said, “but we stretched two lines, made an aggressive interior attack and located the fire in a bedroom on the second floor.”

Tankers from the Katonah, Bedford Hills, Yorktown and Millwood assisted Mount Kisco, providing a valuable water source in the area, which lacks fire hydrants.

Firefighters knocked down the main body of the fire after about 15 minutes and by 10:20 p.m., had the situation completely under control, Jackson said. No injuries were reported.

Jackson said the fire was accidental and began in a second-floor bedroom after an extension cord overheated.

Firefighters continued checking the home late Friday, making sure no lingering hot spots were present. Jackson said the second floor sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage and was left uninhabitable. The fire department shut down utilities at the home before leaving the scene, he said.

The house is adjacent to the Yeshiva Farm Settlement School. Though dozens of children could be seen watching firefighters in action, Jackson said the building was a family home and did appear to have served as any type of dorm.
