Williamsburg - Elderly woman killed in apartment blaze

A 73-year-old woman was killed late Saturday after a fire erupted inside her Williamsburg apartment.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out inside the unidentified woman’s 12th-floor apartment on Ross Street near Wythe Ave. — inside the Taylor Wythe Houses — at 11:09 p.m.

The fire was contained to the victim’s bed, sources said.

The woman, who lived alone, was apparently found lying on a mattress that had been burned down to its springs, fire officials confirmed.

“She couldn’t get out,” Deputy Fire Chief Vincent Mandala told the Daily News.

The blaze was rendered under control at 11:41 p.m., officials said.

No other injuries were reported, according to an FDNY spokesman.

The exact cause of the fire was still under investigation early Sunday.
