Car Plunges Into Hudson River

A woman was rescued out of the Hudson River this morning after the out-of-control car she was driving lost control and plunged into the water.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, was pulled out of the cold water at 10:05 a.m. after the Toyota Camry she was operating was hit by another car while on the Henry Hudson Parkway near the West 96th Street exit, fire officials said.

The confused woman was trying to make a U-turn near a parking lot when the accident took place, a police source said.

The car then spun around, was forced off the highway onto a Parks Department service road and through a fence before splashing into the water, witnesses said.

The driver of the Nissan Altima involved in the accident, who did not want to give his name, said, "She hit me. I saw [the car] go into the river and I called 911."

The man stayed at the scene and was questioned by investigators.

FDNY Deputy Chief Dan Donoghue said the woman was found "partially submerged" in the water about two blocks north.

NYPD ESU cops pulled the woman out after spotting her bobbing up and down about six feet from the seawall.

"She was conscious," said Donoghue.

The woman was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in stable condition.

Divers also scoured the waters looking for other victims, but found no one else after witnesses told the FDNY that the woman had been alone in the car.
