Brooklyn, NY - Outrage After Anti-semitic Arsonists Hit Flatbush Community
Hate-filled vandals torched three cars and scrawled racist and anti-Semitic messages on a Brooklyn block early Friday morning, police said.
Residents in Midwood woke to find three cars on Ocean Parkway, between Avenues I and J, had been set on fire.
A red van had also been vandalized with the black letters “KKK,” the acronym of white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan.
Eight nearby benches had been spray-painted with swastikas and “SS” — a reference to the brutal Nazi police force — and “f*** the Jews” was scrawled on the sidewalk, police said.
A BMW belonging to the mother of University of Massachussets student Bobby Tebele was among those scorched.
The 18-year-old smelled smoke around 5 a.m. and ran outside as flames engulfed the vehicles.
“It’s not so much that the cars got blown up, it’s the hatred behind it that’s chilling,” he said. “Of course this would happen the one time I don’t park in the driveway.”
The hateful attack comes the day after the anniversary of Kristallnacht in 1938, when the homes and businesses of Jews across Germany were raided by Nazis overnight and synagogues were ransacked and set on fire.
“There are crazy people in this world who just have nothing to do but hate,” said speech therapist Sandra Simone, who teaches at a school in the largely orthodox Jewish neighborhood.
“This is a sign of the times that somebody would be emboldened enough to do this.”
City Councilman David Greenfield’s office offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the offensive messages.
“We will not accept anti-Semitism in our community,” he said Friday.
“There is zero tolerance for such acts of hatred and ignorance.
“I'm confident that these hateful people will be caught and punished to the full extent of the law.”
Officers from the 66th Precinct were alerted to the crime spree at 5:30 a.m. and the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
