Bedford Ave after Brooklyn College
Who knew?
New York City's safest neighborhood isn't on the Upper East Side of tony townhouses -- it's in Midwood, near Brooklyn College.
The tiny Bedford Avenue strip, where the average single-family home can hover over the million-dollar mark, is nestled between East 22nd and 26th streets and avenues K and I.
This safe haven means you have a one in 500 chance of being a crime victim, according to a study by the financial Web site WalletPop in conjunction with NeighborhoodScout, a Web-based search engine that builds neighborhood profiles for people looking to relocate.
The findings were based on US Census Bureau and FBI crime data.
The stretch of Bedford Avenue is also the third-safest urban neighborhood in the nation, based on a survey of 7,685 areas in 29 of the biggest American cities.
Out of the top 200 safe areas, 153 were in New York, said a WalletPop spokeswoman.
"There are plenty of safe neighborhoods in these giant cities that are often thought to be dangerous. New York is thought to be dangerous, but look at how many safe neighborhoods there are," she said.
Residents on Bedford Avenue can boast that their quiet tree-lined area is safer than 90 percent of all 61,000 small towns and villages across America.
The FBI-index crimes are homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft.
