NEW YORK - A small stunt plane made an emergency landing on a highway in West Islip, Long Island Thursday afternoon.
The plane went down on Route 231, which is also known as John Street. The pilot was able to walk away unharmed.
Newsday identified the pilot as David Windmiller. The stunt pilot was forced to land after his engine seized up at about 2,200 feet.
The red, white and blue plane appeared intact on a grassy area next to the road, except for its propeller blades, which apparently came apart when the engine stopped working.
He was heading to Republic Airport, a few miles from where he went down, when the problems started.
Windmiller has been a professional stunt pilot since 1994. He is a former member of the United States Aerobatic Team.
