The search for a missing Long Island man is intensifying asfrustration builds for friends, relatives and authorities after Steven Mayer, 65, disappeared without a trace a week ago.
In a world where it is increasingly difficult to avoid the ever-present eye of surveillance cameras or drive through busy urban areas without leaving a digital trace, it seems baffling that Mayer could have left his home in Great Neck for his job as a scrap metal trader in Hungtington, only to vanish into thin air.
Roughly 2000 people traveling from locations as far-flung as New Jersey and upstate New York joined in the search, scouring Great Neck, Huntington, Washington Heights and Riverhead. So far the efforts have been fruitless -- without even a trace of Mayer's car, a 2010 Nissan Sentra.
The only clues come from a cell phone tower that recorded calls Mayer made on his way in to work. He called his work and mentioned that he was taking the LIE, a route he rarely used. After triangulating his cell phone's location, it was discovered that his last communication came from Riverhead and that for some reason he didn't get off the highway when he was supposed to.
Mayer's wife, Susan, reportedly confirmed that the last call he made with his cell phone was to his deceased parents' telephone number. Mrs. Mayer is reportedly worried that her husband may have had a stroke, or that he is suffering from dementia.
The search is being organized by the Great Neck synagogue where Mayer was once the acting president.
Relatives say that although Mayer did have a brain tumor diagnosed more than a decade ago, his health overall was very good.
